Associate Lecturer, Kiribati Teachers College (KTC)
Program Background
EduKAiT is the main platform for the Australian Government’s support to the Kiribati Education sector, specifically the Government of Kiribati and Ministry of Education (MoE), as it implements its Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP 2024-27).
The program will be implemented in two five-year phases over 10 years. Phase 1 includes an emphasis on Literacy and Language for School Years 1-3, and gender and increased English proficiency for School Years 7–9 and address the high Year 9 dropout rate for boys.

The Role
KTC Associate Lecturers are responsible for:
- Collaborating with MoE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) working groups and Primary and Junior Secondary Principals in planning and developing the content of new in-service professional development for continuous professional development programs (CPD).
- Supporting Primary and Junior Secondary teachers in the effective implementation of the new language and literacy curriculum, and other MoE curriculum priorities like the Mauboniaia Ataein Tungaru (MAT) using established approaches and methodologies in CPD workshops and through follow up visits.
- Making use of different technology including Microsoft Teams, ZOOM, the production of video and radio broadcasts to support teachers implement the techniques covered in CPD.
- Ensuring thorough monitoring and evaluation practices are followed with all CPD, so that all data and stories are collected according to guidelines.
Management and Supervision:
- KTC Associate Lecturers come under the management of the Associate Lecturer Coordinator, and work in close collaboration with the CPD Steering Committee, Working groups, and the EduKAiT program.
Reporting and Recording:
- KTC Associate Lecturers will be expected to submit work plans, monthly reports and other reports required to the Associate Lecturer Coordinator. These reports may be shared with Deputy Principal (Learning Quality), KTC Executive or nominee, relevant Program Coordinators, and/or the EduKAiT Deputy Team Leader/Technical Advisers.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
- Minimum of 10 years’ teaching experience
- Demonstrated leadership and innovation in teaching (e.g. development of innovative teaching approaches, resources or programs; mentoring of other teachers, establishment of school-based professional development initiatives)
- English language proficiency as demonstrated by any ONE of the following:
- Achievement of ISLPR level 4, KELT level 8 or TELPA B2
- Completion of tertiary studies at an international tertiary education institution using English as the medium of instruction (e.g. USP)
- Experience studying and/or working in an English-speaking country
- Other evidence of English language proficiency
- Evidence of leadership experience in educational or other relevant contexts
- Well-developed presentation and facilitation skills
- ICT, data collection and analysis skills
- No formal complaints recorded with the Ministry of Education or another government Ministry or agency
Desirable:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Organisational and planning skills.
- Confidence and ability to engage with a range of people including school leaders, teachers, community organisations, children and people with a range of disabilities.
- Data collection, data base management and data analysis skills.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the EduKAiT program including international advisors.
- Networking and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain relationships with Ministry of Education staff, teachers, community members and other key activity partners.
Personal Qualities:
- The ability to establish positive working relationships with a range of people across contexts, including school leaders and teachers
- Commitment to teamwork, coaching and mentoring
- Very good physical health fitness to undertake all tasks required in this position
