Job Summary

A Generator Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting a variety of power generators to ensure reliable operation. This role involves regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and emergency repair of both portable and standby generators, ensuring their efficient and safe performance in various settings.

Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities:

Inspection and Diagnosis:
  • Perform routine inspections and diagnostic tests on diesel, gas, and propane-powered generators.
  • Identify mechanical and electrical issues and provide troubleshooting solutions to ensure generators are operating at optimal levels.


Maintenance and Repair:

  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacement, fluid level checks, and overall system inspections.
  • Perform repairs and adjustments on generator engines, alternators, and associated electrical systems.
  • Replace faulty components, such as belts, hoses, filters, fuel injectors, and wiring.


Electrical System Knowledge:

  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and manuals to understand and repair electrical systems within the generator
  • Test and replace batteries, circuits, and other electrical components as needed to ensure reliable performance.


Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, repairs, and replacements performed on generators.
  • Prepare detailed service reports, documenting any issues identified, work performed, and recommendations for further maintenance.


Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to all company and regulatory safety standards, including proper handling of fuel, oil, and chemicals.
  • Perform work in compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and manufacturer standards to ensure safe and efficient operations.


Customer Service and Communication:

  • Communicate with clients or team members to explain generator performance, maintenance needs, and repair procedures.
  • Advise customers on generator best practices and respond to emergency call-outs when required.


Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of vocational or technical training in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience as a generator mechanic, diesel mechanic, or equivalent role.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., Diesel Mechanic Certification, Generator Technician Certification) are advantageous. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
