Job Summary

Subject teachers are responsible for maximizing the academic progress of the students they teach, working with colleagues to participate fully in the development of the department. They promote a positive, purposeful, and professional working atmosphere that encourages cooperation and challenge, whilst valuing and supporting the contribution that individuals make to the success of the department. The Humanities are popular subjects and have seen increasing numbers of students opting to study these at both IGCSE and A Level. We take an innovative approach to teaching and learning across all phases to inspire a love of the subjects, whilst also developing the skills of successful and intellectually confident students.

Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Encourage high standards in all aspects of school life, particularly in student progress 
  • Contribute to the effective and efficient running of the school  
  • Promote a school culture that is positive, purposeful, and professional  
  • Support and motivate students, teachers, and other school employees  
  • Encourage consultation, review, and improvement  
  • Embrace the High-Performance Learning (HPL) philosophy and framework and apply it to all aspects of  school life 
  • Be punctual, organized, and willing to fully contribute to all aspects of school life 


Teaching and Learning Responsibilities:

  • Plan and prepare well-structured, clearly presented lessons appropriate to the abilities of all students and  the syllabus being taught 
  • Make sure that the classroom is a stimulating environment that facilitates learning 
  • Generate enthusiasm for the subject being taught and inspire all students to work to their potential
  • Liaise with Heads of Department and Head of Inclusion where a student may have special educational  needs and with the form tutor if a student is experiencing pastoral difficulties
  • Promote high standards of behavior by encouraging a positive, proactive approach to study and building  productive relationships with students  
  • Produce, maintain, and share high-quality learning materials and resources which are aligned with the  Upper School HPL approach  
  • Set homework according to policy and pertinent to the student’s ability and wider workload
  • Provide effective feedback to further student learning, instigating reteaching strategies when required 9. Promote high standards in the use of English as an inclusive language and help develop English for  Academic Progress 
  • Assess, record, and monitor the progress of all students according to faculty guidelines, recording academic  and Skills for Learning results centrally  
  • Use a data-driven approach to identify learning patterns and implement effective action plans to address  any learning gaps 
  • Contribute to intervention programmes and IGCSE and A Level revision when required  
  • Provide high-quality, accurate, constructive, and targeted information to parents at parent consultations,  in subject reports, incidental meetings, and communications 


Responsibilities to the Department and School:

  • Be respectful of the needs of colleagues and the department concerning cooperation, collegiality,  deadlines, and team cohesion 
  • Participate positively in departmental meetings, follow policies, and generally contribute to the effective  and efficient running of the department  
  • Promote professional dialogue, share ideas about teaching and learning, and support other teachers in  developing good practices and new approaches and initiatives 
  • Take part in, and contribute to, INSET activities offered in the department and by the school
  • Enthusiastically contribute to cross-curricular links and initiatives, and Leadership in Action activities 6. Be involved in new responsibilities within the department as part of an ongoing process of professional  development 
  • Keep up to date with developments in the subject, and in education generally  


Other Responsibilities:

  • Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Department, Head of Faculty or members  of the Senior Leadership Team and any duties that the Head of school deems necessary for the effective  operation of the school


Requirements:

  • Appropriate degree, with TRCN or other teaching qualification
  • Minimum three (3) years of teaching experience
  • Familiarity with the Nigerian and British Curricular (plus IGCSE/ and/or A Levels as appropriate)
  • Passion for teaching and commitment to educating the whole child
  • A high level of professionalism and consideration for the well-being of children
  • Recent and consistent involvement in extracurricular activities
  • Respect for all members of a school community, irrespective of position, gender, age, and ethnic background.
  • A positive and solution-focused attitude to working life
  • Acceptable police checks
  • Appropriate references from current and previous employer, corroborated by personal phone calls made  to each referee


Experience in the following areas would be an advantage:

  • A passion for innovative teaching and learning which you share with colleagues. 
  • Experience teaching either Geography, History, or Religious Studies from Key Stage 2  through to A Level. 
  • A willingness to teach Humanities subjects outside of your specialism
  • Experience in teaching high achieving students at IGCSE and A Level, and the ability to extend able students.
  • Experience in designing and delivering innovative and academically challenging lessons. 
  • A willingness to offer regular additional support to students outside of normal teaching time.  
  • A desire to participate in the wider life of the school, contributing with enthusiasm to extracurricular clubs and activities regularly.  
  • Experience in leading and delivering related extracurricular activities and trips.


Remuneration: NGN 180,000 and above
