Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities:


Student Health Care & Medical Assistance:

  • Provide first aid and emergency care for students and staff.
  • Assess and manage common illnesses and injuries.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician instructions.
  • Maintain accurate health records and documentation.


Special Needs Management:

  • Monitor and assist students with sensitive illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and severe allergies.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with medical conditions.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, and healthcare providers to ensure proper care for students.


Preventative Care:

  • Organize for vision, hearing, and other health screenings as required.
  • Track immunization compliance and follow up with students who need vaccinations.
  • Provide health education on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, mental health, and disease prevention.


Emergency Preparedness & Infection Control:

  • Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate with emergency medical services (EMS) when necessary.
  • Train staff in CPR, first aid, and other health-related protocols.


Collaboration & Communication:

  • Serve as a liaison between students, parents, school staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Support students’ mental and emotional well-being by referring them to counselors or social workers when needed.
  • Participate in school safety planning and crisis intervention teams.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • A registered Nurse (RN) license is required.
  • School Nurse certification may be required depending on state regulations.
  • Prior experience in pediatric, adolescent, or school nursing is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle medical emergencies calmly.


Work Environment:

  • Typically works in the school clinic.
  • May need to respond to medical situations in classrooms, hallways, or sports fields.
