Job Summary

As the Head of News and Current Affairs, you will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of our news operations. You will oversee the strategic direction, editorial content, and operational management of our news department to ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and engaging news coverage across multiple platforms.

Job Description/Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement strategic plans for news coverage in alignment with the organization's mission and goals. Stay abreast of industry trends and technological advancements to drive innovation and adaptation in news delivery.
  • Editorial Oversight: Maintain high editorial standards and ensure compliance with journalistic ethics and legal requirements.
  • Team Management: Manage and mentor a team of journalists, editors, producers, and support staff. Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages creativity, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Content Development and Production: Oversee the planning, production, and distribution of news content across various platforms, including digital, broadcast, and social media.
  • Audience Engagement and Community Relations: Analyze audience feedback and data analytics to adjust content strategies and enhance audience engagement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, and industry partners. Represent the organization in public forums and media events, advocating for journalistic integrity and the organization's editorial mission.
  • Crisis Management and Decision Making: Respond effectively to breaking news and crises, ensuring accurate and responsible reporting.
  • Make informed and timely decisions under pressure, balancing journalistic standards with organizational priorities and legal considerations.


Responsibilities :

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and execute strategic plans for news coverage, aligning them with the organization's mission and audience expectations.
  • Editorial Oversight: Ensure all news content meets high standards of accuracy, fairness, and journalistic ethics. Make final decisions on story selection, angles, and presentation.
  • Content Management: Oversee the creation, production, and distribution of news content across multiple platforms (broadcast, digital, social media, etc.).
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage budgets for news operations, allocating resources effectively to optimize coverage and maintain fiscal responsibility.
  • Audience Engagement: Monitor audience trends and feedback to inform content decisions.
  • Develop strategies to grow and engage audiences across different demographics and platforms.
  • Partnership and Collaboration: Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders including government agencies, community organizations, and other media outlets.
  • Crisis Management: Handle breaking news situations and crises effectively, ensuring timely and accurate reporting while maintaining public trust and organizational integrity.
  • Technology and Innovation: Stay abreast of technological advancements and industry trends.
  • Implement innovative tools and approaches to enhance news gathering, production, and distribution.
  • Legal and Ethical Compliance: Ensure compliance with legal requirements, including defamation laws, copyright issues, and privacy regulations. Uphold ethical standards in reporting and decision-making.
  • Market and Competitive Analysis: Conduct market research and competitive analysis to identify opportunities and threats. Adjust strategies accordingly to maintain competitive advantage.
  • Representation and Advocacy: Serve as a spokesperson for the news organization, representing its interests and values in public forums and industry events.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the newsroom. Encourage experimentation and learning from successes and challenges.


Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in a senior editorial role within a reputable news organization.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams.
  • Excellent editorial judgment and a deep understanding of news values, ethics, and legal principles.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to drive innovation and change in a fast-paced media environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Must have worked in the same capacity in a TV house
  • An Abuja-based or be ready to relocate
  • Ability to handle news content and scroll messages
  • Ability to source and get trending news


Location: Abuja

Remuneration: NGN 150,000 - 200,000
